What Is It and What Can You Do?
Pregnancy is a unique and special experience, but it also comes with its challenges. One common complaint is round ligament pain, which is often dismissed with remarks like, "Just rest, it will pass." But what exactly is round ligament pain, how can you recognize it, and what can you do about it?
What Is Round Ligament Pain?
Round ligament pain occurs due to strain or irritation of the round ligament. This ligament connects the uterus to the pubic bone and is also partially linked to the outer labia.
The pain is often described as sharp, dull, or stabbing and is typically felt in the lower abdomen or groin area. In some cases, the discomfort may radiate to the labia. It is usually not constant but can worsen with sudden movements such as turning quickly, sneezing, or coughing.
While round ligament pain is not harmful, it can be quite uncomfortable. If you experience abdominal pain and are unsure whether it is caused by round ligament strain or something else, it’s always best to consult your midwife or gynecologist.
What Can You Do to Relieve Round Ligament Pain?
A chiropractor can safely and effectively treat round ligament pain. Additionally, there are several things you can do to help alleviate the discomfort:
Avoid standing for long periods and lifting heavy objects. This reduces strain on the ligament.
Support your abdomen when sneezing, coughing, or laughing. Lean slightly forward and hold your lower abdomen with your hands.
Stretch the muscles around your hips. Ask your healthcare provider for suitable exercises.
Avoid sudden movements. This can help prevent or lessen the pain.
Stay active. Light, regular movement helps keep your muscles and joints flexible. Prenatal yoga is an excellent option. Strengthening your core can also help prevent discomfort.
Prevention Is Better Than Cure
While it may be difficult to completely prevent round ligament pain, following the tips above can help reduce the likelihood of discomfort.
